Are you worried that age discrimination is playing a part in your jobsearch?
There is legislation in place which theoretically should prevent any candidate applying for a job being discriminated on the basis of age. In reality we all know that perceptions and beliefs of those screening CVs and conducting interview can still reject candidates – even if subconsciously.
So what can we do about this?
Well, in the first instance we can ensure that our skills are current and relevant, tailoring our CVs to highlight our skills, experience and achievement which are appropriate to both the role and the culture of the company.
At interview assume your age is not an issue. When you attended job interviews in your 20 and 30s at interview did you even consider your age would be an issue prior to walking into the interview room? It wasn’t an issue then and you shouldn’t be wasting energy thinking of it as an issue now. Think positive. What was the best job you ever had? Try to think back to your interview for that job at that time. Capture that moment in your mind and walk into this interview with that same mindset and attitude.
Do not make the mistake of dressing to look younger – think ageless. Engage in the moment. Keep in your mind the advantages your additional years of experience can bring. Demonstrate at interview that you are looking ahead in terms of what you can contribute to the role and the company and to your own personal career advancement. Present yourself as a thoroughly prepared candidate in all respects…I have written separate tips articles on preparing thoroughly for interviews:

There are companies who recognise that the experience that comes with age and maturity can be an advantage and actively encourage ‘older’ workers to apply for roles. Prime Candidate is one site that encourages employees to register their CVs …and employers to advertise their roles. At least you know that when applying for jobs through age positive sites that the company culture is one of encouraging mature workers to join their organisation.
Think ‘Ageless’ and DON’T let age get in the way of getting the job you want!
